COURSE SUMMARY

Skill Set – RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Space, MSMWHS201 – Conduct Hazard Analysis, MSMPER300 – Issue Work Permits & MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres – Combined Confined Spaces – 2 days teaches the skills and knowledge required by an individual working alone or as part of a team or group, working in liaison with other shift members and the control room operator to be able to conduct a hazard analysis and to issue work permits for a variety of activities in a workplace environment in which hazards exist or specific procedures need to be followed and monitored.

This course covers an understanding of the permit system and the limitations of each permit and making decisions regarding the need for and corrects use of each permit. Students will learn about carrying out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace, to interpret the readings and take actions based on the interpretation.

  • Planning and preparing for work in a confined space
  • Work in confined space
  • Entry and exit of confined space and clean up
  • Define the context for the hazard analysis
  • Identify hazards, assess and control risks
  • Monitor and review risk controls
  • Identify need for work permit and ensuring job site is prepared for authorised work
  • Raise and issue work permits and monitor work for compliance
  • Receive end of day report and close work permit
  • Prepare for gas testing and test gas
  • Maintain equipment

RECERTIFICATION

Participants are required to re-certify every 2 years from their completion date to maintain currency.

COURSE DELIVERY

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd training facility.

COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)
  • Face to Face – 22 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
  • Refresher training – 20 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates
WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

Participants are required to be physically fit and capable entering and working in a confined space.

Maximum of 8 Trainees per course.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenarios:

  • Locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures
  • Determine the scope of work and the purpose of the hazard analysis
  • Complete a risk assessment (HIRAC), Job Safety Analysis, Safe Work Method Statement
  • Identify relevant personnel and specialised knowledge
  • Specify risk controls to bring risks to ALARP
  • Monitor and review risk control
  • Identifying and raise the type of work permit required
  • Issuing the permit and preparing for work and monitor the work
  • Completing an entry permit for working in a confined space
  • Prepare to enter in to conduct work and exit from a confined space
  • Complete an equipment fault log
  • Prepare for a test gas in a confined space, wellhead or other potentially unsafe space or area
  • Using and maintain testing and monitoring equipment
  • Interpreting readings and take required action
  • Monitoring the atmosphere and safety at all times
  • Following communication and recording procedures
  • Side entry, top entry and ground level entry into confined space and exit
  • Demonstrate concluding operation techniques
  • Receiving end of day report and close the work permit
  • Clean, care for, maintain and store all relevant PPE and equipment

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
