COURSE SUMMARY

Skill Set – RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces, MSMWHS201 – Conduct Hazard Analysis, MSMPER300 – Issue Work Permits, MSMWHS216 – Operate Breathing Apparatus, MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres & HLTAID001 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – Combined Confined Spaces – 3 days teaches the skills and knowledge required by an individual working alone, as part of a team or group and working in liaison with other shift members and the control room operator to be able to conduct a hazard analysis; and to issue work permits for a variety of activities in a workplace environment in which hazards exist or specific procedures need to be followed and monitored.

This covers an understanding of the permit system and the limitations of each permit and making decisions regarding the need for and corrects use of each permit. This competency unit includes the issue of any and all permits.

Students will learn about operating and maintaining breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere, as well as carrying out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace, to interpret the readings and take actions based on the interpretation. 

It also covers the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines

This course requires students to successfully complete all the 5 units of competency. Student must successfully meet all criteria for all units to be deemed competent.

The target group will be construction workers requiring training in safely working in confined space at work sites within:

• Civil construction
• Storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, ducts and ships
• Enclosed and partially enclosed spaces
• Coal mining
• Drilling
• Extractive industries
• Metalliferous mining

People who supervise but do not necessary enter confined spaces need to be aware of the risks and equipment checks that need to be in place to adequately protect people under their control.

COURSE CONTENT

• Planning and preparing for work in a confined space
• Work in confined space
• Entry and exit of confined space and clean up
• Define the context for the hazard analysis
• Identify hazards, assess and control risks
• Monitor and review risk controls
• Identify need for work permit and ensuring job site is prepared for authorised work
• Raise and issue work permits and monitor work for compliance
• Receive end of day report and close work permit
• Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus
• Operate breathing apparatus
• Conclude operations in accordance with procedures
• Prepare for gas testing and test gas
• Maintain equipment
• Respond to an emergency situation
• Perform CPR procedures
• Communicate details of the incident

RECERTIFICATION

Participants are required to re-certify every 2 years from their completion date to maintain currency. HLTAID001 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation requires to be re-certified every 12 months from their completion date to maintain currency.

COURSE DELIVERY

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd training facility.

COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)

• Face to Face – 27 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
• Refresher training – 25 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants are required to be physically fit and capable to wear a breathing apparatus and work in a confined space. Participants must be physically capable of performing uninterrupted CPR for at least 2 minutes on an adult CPR manikin placed on the floor.

Maximum of 8 Trainees per course.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Performance tasks – The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:

• Perform CPR on an adult
• Perform CPR on an infant
• Defibrillation

Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenarios:

• Locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures
• Determine the scope of work and the purpose of the hazard analysis
• Complete a risk assessment (HIRAC), Job Safety Analysis, Safe Work Method Statement
• Identify relevant personnel and specialised knowledge
• Specify risk controls to bring risks to ALARP
• Monitor and review risk control
• Identifying and raise the type of work permit required
• Issuing the permit and preparing for work and monitor the work
• Completing an entry permit for working in a confined space
• Prepare to enter in to conduct work and exit from a confined space
• Demonstrate pre-donning checks, tests, procedures and fault reporting
• Complete an equipment fault log
• Label the components of breathing apparatus
• Prepare for a test gas in a confined space, wellhead or other potentially unsafe space or area
• Using and maintain testing and monitoring equipment
• Interpreting readings and take required action
• Monitoring the atmosphere and safety at all times
• Following communication and recording procedures
• Side entry, top entry and ground level entry into confined space and exit
• Demonstrate concluding operation techniques
• Receiving end of day report and close the work permit
• Clean, care for, maintain and store all relevant PPE and equipment

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
