COURSE SUMMARY

Skill Set – MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres, RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces & RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights – 1 day teaches the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus to find out if it is safe for the proposed work safely enter and work in confined spaces and for workers who are required to work at heights.

MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take acting’s based on the interpretation. 

Working environments may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. Workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.

The unit is suitable for use in the following situations:

• confined spaces, enclosed and partially enclosed spaces
• hot work
• storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships
• testing as part of issuing a work permit or monitoring as part of working under a work permit
• open areas or holding the gas tester by hand
• lowering the gas tester into a space, e.g. on a line.

RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces covers the skills and knowledge required to enter and work in confined spaces in the resources and infrastructure industries. It is appropriate for those working in operational roles undertaking work in confined spaces.

RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined specifies the competency required to work in a confined space (enclosed or partially enclosed) for the purpose of carrying out work or inspections. It includes the minimum criteria for competency assessment. This unit includes entry and exit procedures, assessment of associated risks, how to operate safely in a confined space which is at atmospheric pressure during occupancy and cleaning up.

RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights teaches the skills and knowledge required to work safely at heights in the resources and infrastructure industries. This course is appropriate for those working in operational roles where they are required to perform work at heights.

If an employer has personnel working where they can fall from one height to another and there is risk of injury, then a provision must be made to prevent falls. Appropriate equipment must be made available and appropriate training must be given under the National Workplace Health and Safety Act and in particular; the National Code Of Practice for Managing Risks of Falls at the Workplace.

This skill set covers risk assessment, advice on the right selection and correct use of equipment, rigging and anchor systems, fall restraint, work positioning and fall arrest systems. This skill set will enable you to comply with current WHS Legislation. Trainees are trained how to correctly select height safety equipment and how to apply it.

Skill Set – MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres, RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces & RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights – (1 day) target group will be construction workers and operators who require training in safely entering and working in confined space, testing atmospheres and who are required to work at heights.

RECERTIFICATION

Participants are required to re-certify every 2 years from their completion date to maintain currency.

COURSE DELIVERY

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd training facility.

COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)

• Face to Face – 10 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
• Refresher training – 10 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates

WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants are required to have sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete this course. Participants are required to be physically able to do a gas test in a range of atmospheres. 

Participants are also required to be physically able to wear PPE; and enter and work in confined spaces. Participants also require a level of physical ability to complete this course in order to be deemed competent or issued with a statement of attainment.

Maximum of 10 Trainees per course.

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenarios:

• Preparing for and test gas in a confined space, wellhead or other potentially unsafe space or area
• Using and maintain testing and monitoring equipment
• Identifying hazards and control them
• Interpreting readings and take required action
• Following communication and recording procedures
• Side entry into confined space
• Top entry into confined space
• Ground level entry into confined space
• Complete a risk assessment (hirac) – Job Hazard Analysis – Safe Work Method Statement
• Complete an entry permit
• Identifying and interpreting work requirements
• Identifying and interpreting work procedures and instructions
• Accessing, interpreting and applying technical and safety information
• Identifying required safety systems including fall protection and associated equipment
• Accessing and installing equipment and check it is correct
• Conducting checks and inspections on the area and equipment
• Assessing hazards and risk associated with working at heights and implement control methods
• Safely perform work at heights
• Cleaning up work area

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
