This skill set is made up of two units of competency – RIIWHS202D – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces and MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres.
Enter and Work in Confined Spaces covers the entering and working in confined spaces in resources and infrastructure industries. It includes planning and preparing for entry of confined spaces; entry and working in confined spaces, exiting confined spaces and cleaning up.
This unit specifies the competency required to work in a confined space (enclosed or partially enclosed) for the purpose of carrying out work or inspections. It includes the minimum criteria for competency assessment. This unit includes entry and exit procedures, assessment of associated risks and how to operate safely in a confined space which is at atmospheric pressure during occupancy.
Gas Test Atmospheres covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.
It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or work space. The competency required the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.
Working environment may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.
Gas Test Atmospheres is suitable for use in the following situations:
The target group will be construction workers and operators who require training in safely working in confined space and testing atmospheres.

**There is no legislative requirement for refresher training for any units of competency from National Training Packages. It is suggested that refresher training for enter and work in confined spaces could be conducted every 3 years. This refresher training is at the discretion of the employer.
*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
