Course Summary

This unit covers the entering and working in confined spaces in resources and infrastructure industries. It includes planning and preparing for entry of confined spaces; entry and working in confined spaces, exiting confined spaces and cleaning up.

These units also address the need for personnel who issue work permits to understand the permit system, know the limitations of each permit and make decisions regarding the need for and correct use of each permit. This competency unit includes the issue of any and all permits.

These units are also about testing the working atmosphere to determine if it is safe for the proposed work. Testing involves the use of electronic test apparatus.

The target group will be construction workers requiring training in safely working in confined space at work sites within:

  • Civil construction
  • Coal mining
  • Drilling
  • Extractive industries
  • Metalliferous mining

People who supervise but do not necessary enter confined spaces need to be aware of the risks and equipment checks that need to be in place to adequately protect people under their control.

Course Content
  • Identify and control confined space hazards
  • Work safely within confined spaces
  • Complete relevant risk assessments and permits
  • Operate various confined space safety equipment.
  • Understand the effects of airbourne hazards on the body
  • Use a gas detector and interpret readings
  • The obligations of a standby person, and supervise confined space operations

  • Risk assessments and hierarchy of hazard controls

  • Atmospheric monitoring and gas detection
  • Confined space equipment Tripods, VED’S & Fall protective equipment
  • Practical entries into a confined space
  • Safety and emergency procedures
  • Confined space training & refresher training is recommended every 12-24 months under Australian Standard AS2865-2009
  • Specialised equipment and PPE/PPC required for your workplace needs.

Delivery

2 days (approximately 16 hours). Max of 8 Trainees per course.

  • MSMWHS201 – Conduct Hazard Analysis
  • MSMPER300 – Issue Work Permits
  • MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres
Recertification

**There is no legislative requirement for refresher training for any units of competency from National Training Packages. It is suggested that refresher training for enter and work in confined spaces could be conducted every 3 years. This refresher training is at the discretion of the employer.

*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
