PUAFIR324 – Render Hazardous Materials Incidents Safe covers the skills and knowledge required to safely combat incidents involving hazardous materials.

PUAFIR324 – Render Hazardous Materials Incidents Safe applies to personnel who respond to incidents involving hazardous materials and who have the skills and knowledge to identify and assess hazards and risks and contribute to the development, implementation and review of the plan constructed to mitigate the risks they pose to the public and the environment.

Hazardous materials incidents is a generic term used to refer to an incident involving any hazardous materials based on physico-chemical, chemical, biological or radiological properties that pose an unreasonable risk to risk to life, property or the environment. This includes dangerous goods, goods too dangerous to be transported and hazardous chemicals.

The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or organisations that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

RECERTIFICATION

Participants are required to re-certify every 3 years from their completion date to maintain currency.

COURSE DELIVERY

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd training facility.

COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)
  • Face to Face – 31 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
  • Refresher training – 12 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates
WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants must have sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete this course. Participants are required to be physically able to don, operate in, decontaminate and remove personal protective clothing and equipment.

 PREREQUISITES
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenarios:

  • Identify hazardous incident
  • Identify and assess site hazards
  • Develop control and containment plans
  • Mitigate the incident
  • Use PPE and work in a team
  • Set up control, isolation and security zones
  • Render the incident safe
  • Decontaminate and clean up

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
