COURSE SUMMARY

PUAEME004 – Provide Emergency Care for Suspected Spinal Injury will allow you to develop skills and knowledge and most importantly, confidence, to provide emergency care to a casualty with a suspected spinal injury.  You will develop the skills to minimise further injury when applying first aid and waiting for emergency medical aid.  It includes recognition and management of a suspected spinal injury, immobilising cervical spine, evaluating the need to move a casualty, preparing a casualty for transport, transporting and monitoring a casualty and performing a casualty handover.

Providing emergency care for a suspected spinal injury requires instruction and practical training.  This is especially true where it relates to potentially fatal injuries, such as those that require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or involve severe bleeding. These procedures carry a risk of further injury to the casualty and the first aider. As with any training, it is more useful if training occurs before being confronted with an actual real-life situation.

The unit is applicable to personnel from emergency services, volunteer organisations or organisations which provide a first aid service in an environment where there is a risk of spinal injuries.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

RECERTIFICATION

There is no legislative requirement for refresher training for this unit, except those that fall in line with industry standards/recommendations.

COURSE DELIVERY

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Group Pty Ltd training facility – 214 Bridge Street, West Tamworth NSW 2340.

COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)

• Face to Face – 5 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
• Refresher training – 2 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates

WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants must have sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete this course.

Due to the amount of practical training in this unit, participants must also be physically fit to complete a practical demonstration of moving a casualty with suspected spinal injury.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Performance tasks – The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:

• Fit a conscious casualty with a soft cervical collar
• Fit a conscious casualty with a soft cervical collar and assist to supine position

Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenario:

• Move a casualty with a suspected spinal injury utilising scoop stretchers, spinal boards and strapping and stokes baskets

Workplace documentation – The student is to complete 3 entries in the Workplace Incident Journal.

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
