Course Summary

This course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to recognise potentially hazardous manual tasks and then to prepare for and complete those tasks in a safe manner.

HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely applies to all workers involved in manual handling tasks and is applicable for all work environments.

Topics Include:
  • Recognise manual tasks that may involve risks
  • Identify risk factors and extent of risk
  • Follow organisational procedures
  • Prepare workplace layout
  • Organise task and workflow appropriately
  • Prepare and package loads for movement
  • Select and use PPE/C appropriate to the task
  • Use appropriate posture and handling techniques
  • Select, adjust and use mechanical aids and handling devices according to manufacturer’s instructions
  • Pace and schedule tasks according to procedures
  • Identify hazardous manual tasks and report to supervisor
  • Participate in workplace safety activities
  • Contribute to risk management approach to reduce risks from manual tasks
Assessment Methods:
  • Multiple choice/written questions
  • Practical demonstrations/skills observations
  • Compliant workplace procedures
  • Materials, loads and equipment as required by the individual workplace
  • Presence of hazards
  • Integration of situations requiring problem solving

Option 1 Full course: 4 hours face-to-face-training

Option 2 Refresher course: 2 hours face to face trainingfor those who hold a current HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely certificate.

This course may have pre-course study.


Upon successful completion a Certificate and Wallet Card (upon request) will be issued for HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely


Participants are required to recertify every 2 years from their completion date to maintain currency.


Participants must be aged 14 years or older
