Course Summary

HLTAID004 – Provide an Emergency First Aid Response in an Education and Care Setting teaches the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. This course is developed for educators and support staff working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies.

This unit of competency may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).

This unit of competency has been approved by ACECQA and meets the requirements of “First Aid, Asthma & Anaphylaxis”.

Course Content
  • Assessing an emergency situation
  • Infection control
  • Airway and breathing management, including choking
  • Head, chest and abdominal injuries
  • Bleeding, burns and electric shock
  • Seizures and shock
  • Medical conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes and convulsions
  • Risk management for asthma and anaphylaxis
  • Anaphylaxis emergency management
  • Asthma emergency management
  • Allergic reactions
  • Eye and soft tissue injuries
  • Bites and stings
  • First Aid for minor wounds
  • Near drowning
  • Hyperthermia and hypothermia
  • Fractures, breaks and spinal injuries
  • Poisoning and toxic substances
  • Performing CPR
  • Understanding and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Reporting requirements in education and children’s services
  • General WH&S and legal issues
Delivery

Blended mode:

  • 2 hours of unsupervised pre-course study; and 
  • 6 hours of face to face training and assessment.
Assessment

Multiple choice question paper covering the following:

  •  State/Territory regulations, first aid codes of practice and workplace procedures
  • Legal, workplace and community considerations
  • Considerations when providing CPR
  • Basic anatomy and physiology
  • Responding to first aid scenarios and task demonstrations for Adult CPR, Infant CPR and Defibrillation
  • Anaphylaxis and autoinjector, asthma and medication, choking, turn a casualty on his/her side, bleeding control and shock, PIT for a snake/spider bite, RICE for sprain, bandage and sling for fracture, seizure, poisoning, verbal reporting, debriefing and evaluating
Qualification

A Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment in:

  • HLTAID004 – Provide an Emergency First Aid Response in an Education and Care Setting
  • HLTAID003 – Provide First Aid
  • HLTAID002 – Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
  • HLTAID001 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

will be issued to all successful participants.

Recertification

Participants are required to recertify every 3 years from their completion date to maintain currency. Note: HLTAID001 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation requires refreshing every 12 months from their completion date to maintain currency.

*Please note that it is a requirement of this course that you are physically capable of performing uninterrupted CPR for at least 2 minutes on an adult and infant CPR manikin placed on the floor and able to follow the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
