Course Summary

Minimum of 5 students

Our course comprising one day of theory and one day of hands-on operation. It provides detailed instruction on how to trim and cut felled trees. Students will be taught skills to deal with typical hazards encountered in a forest or bushland setting.

The course also covers basic chainsaw maintenance and sharpening. The second day of training is carried out in the field, where participants are given extensive practical experience in cutting and boring techniques.

This unit is best applicable to situations where the production of timber is not the primary focus of the activity.

This unit can be applied to a variety of employment outcomes including a forestry worker, chainsaw operator, food harvester, harvesting technician and arboriculture worker.

Course Content
  • Prepare for trimming and cutting
  • Visually assess felled trees
  • Plan cutting
  • Safe techniques for cuts
  • Use chainsaw to trim and cut trees

Topics Include:
  • Review work order
  • Select appropriate PPE/C
  • Plan trimming and cutting activities in line with work order
  • Assess tree location and stability
  • Visually assess tree for defects and identify stresses
  • Mark trees too dangerous to cut safely
  • Move or stabilise trees for safe cutting
  • Select cutting pattern and position
  • Clear debris from work area
  • Establish, monitor and maintain communication to ensure safety
  • Operate chainsaw
  • Prepare cut sections for removal from site
  • Follow organisational safety procedures
  • Check chain, remove sharpen, adjust and replace chain and other components in line with manufacturers recommendations
  • Record and report trimming and cutting records
Assessment Methods:
  • Multiple choice/written questions
  • Practical demonstrations/skills observations
  • Chainsaw, chainsaw fuel and oil containers
  • Support tools (hammer, wedges, logging tape, cant hook or breaking bar)
  • Maintenance tools and equipment for chainsaws
  • Personal protective equipment suitable for cutting trees and maintaining chainsaws
  • Manufacturers’ instructions for use and maintenance of equipment
  • Work order with specific instructions for tree cutting activities
  • Template reports for recording tree cutting outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements
  • Organisational procedures for tree trimming and cutting activities

Option 1 Full course: 14 hours face-to-face-training

Option 2 Refresher course: 7 hours face to face trainingfor those who hold a current FWPCOT2239 Trim and Cut Felled Trees certificate.

This course may have pre-course study.


Upon successful completion a Certificate and Wallet Card (upon request) will be issued for FWPCOT2239 Trim and Cut Felled Trees


Participants are required to recertify every 3 years from their completion date to maintain currency.


Participants must be aged 14 years or older

*Please note that it is a requirement of this course that you are physically able to trim and cut felled trees with a chainsaw.

*Please note this course requires a minimum of 5 students and a maximum of 12 students. Travel and accommodation to remote locations is not included in the above course duration

*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing (long pants and long sleeve shirt) that will get dirty and hard toe safety footwear is essential.
