COURSE SUMMARY

Successful completion of the Fire Safety Officer Skills Set (NSW) meets the minimum requirements to be qualified and act as a Fire Safety Officer (NSW Healthcare Policy Directive PD2010_024).

COURSE CONTENT
  • Identify, monitor and report situations that could lead to workplace emergencies
  • Identify, report and correct situations that could prevent workplace emergencies from being safely handled
  • Ensure workplace emergency prevention processes are implemented
  • Ensure appropriate hazard analysis is undertaken and results implemented
  • Ensure workplace emergency protection systems, emergency control equipment and evacuation systems remain effective
  • Prepare for emergency situations
  • Report emergencies and potential emergencies
  • Respond to emergency warnings and advice
  • Evacuate from the work area
  • Initiate and control initial emergency response
  • Anticipate the further development of emergencies
  • Assist with post initial response
  • Prepare for workplace emergencies
  • Apply command, control and coordinate aspects of workplace emergency procedures
  • Control the response to emergency reports, signals and warnings
  • Coordinate reports and results of initial emergency response
  • Conclude incident

RECERTIFICATION

Participants are required to re-certify every 2 years from their completion date to maintain currency.

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Group Pty Ltd training facility.

COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)
  • Face to Face – 2 days (minimum) – full face to face course
  • Refresher training – 2 days (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates
WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants are required to be physically fit to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills such as using equipment assigned to assist with implementing the workplace emergency procedures and providing assistance to those in need during an evacuation. Participants must also have sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete the skill set.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenarios:

  • Following workplace procedures
  • Contributing to emergency management planning
  • Responding to a severe weather emergency, a fire emergency and bomb threat
  • Relate to a range of cultural, linguistic, social and ethnic backgrounds and a range of physical and intellectual abilities
  • Apply methods of accounting for people, assisting people who need assistance and carry out a search pattern within an area
  • Communicate clearly by the means specified in the workplace emergency procedures
  • Contribute to emergency management planning and exercise leadership within a workplace emergency context
  • Use equipment assigned to assist with implementing the workplace emergency procedures post initial response emergency activities
  • Responses to meet the various situations and workplace procedures
  • Communicating in an effective manner, giving and following instructions and implementing workplace procedures
  • Re-stowing initial response equipment
  • Conducting risk assessment
  • Using initial response equipment
  • Managing a small workplace emergency

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
