COURSE SUMMARY

Course Set – Fire Safety Advisor (QLD) has been developed for individuals who wish to work, who are or wish to be appointed as a Fire Safety Advisor (FSA). It teaches participants the skills and knowledge needed to assume the role and responsibilities of a Fire Safety Advisor in accordance with the Queensland Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008.

Fire Safety Advisor (QLD) also equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to advise on appropriate emergency planning, making them familiar with all aspects of building fire safety.

A Fire Safety Advisor (QLD) is required in all high occupancy buildings* listed in the Queensland Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008. *(High occupancy is classified as: 30 or more employees; a Class 2 or 3 building that is more than 25m in height; or a Class 4 building or an at-risk premises, as nominated by the Commissioner of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services).

The course has been developed to cover a broad range of emergencies and facilities as considered in Australian Standard 3745 and Australian Standard 4083.   It applies to employees in the workplace within all industries and in all contexts within Queensland.

COURSE CONTENT
  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of an FSA
  • Understanding legislation relating to fire safety
  • Identifying fire safety installations and equipment in a building
  • Developing an awareness of maintenance and records relating to fire safety
  • Developing risk management strategies
  • Emergency Planning Processes
  • Conducting and Evaluating evacuation exercises and fire drills
  • Operating emergency protection and emergency control equipment

RECERTIFICATION

Participants are required to re-certify every 2 years from their completion date to maintain currency.

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Group Pty Ltd training facility.

COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)
  • Face to Face – 21 hours (3 days) – full face to face course
  • Refresher training – 21 hours (3 days) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates
WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants are required to have sufficient English language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and interpret a range of printed and electronic documents, read and interpret standards, regulations, codes and analyse the information and develop a range of solutions.

Participants must also be able to write reports and recommendations, use computers to research and write and email documents. Participants must be physically fit to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills such as using equipment assigned to assist with implementing the workplace emergency procedures and providing assistance to those in need during an evacuation. Participants must also have sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete the skill set.

There are no prerequisites for this unit.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Performance tasks – The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:

  • Identify and implement emergency protection systems and equipment
  • Monitor and review emergency control structures
  • Prepare for and undertake pre-emergency planning
  • Respond and follow instructions for a fire emergency
  • Operate as part of an ECO in a fire emergency
  • Lead an ECO in a fire emergency
  • Document and maintain a facility emergency plan
  • Manage a small chemical spill
  • Put out a small paper/wood fire

Documentation – The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:

  • Workplace emergency checklist
  • Emergency equipment fault log
  • Workplace emergency plan review report
  • Emergency evacuation incident and debrief form
  • Facility emergency plan
  • Incident report

Case Study – The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:

  • Hazardous work
  • Review safe work practices and plans

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
